Drag entered Romanian from Old Church Slavonic or an early South Slavic dialect, part of a large layer of Slavic vocabulary absorbed into Romanian in the early medieval period. The root meant precious or costly, and it kept both a literal sense of value and a warmer sense of affection as it settled into Romanian. Unlike much of the core Romanian lexicon, it does not descend from Latin.
