Etymology

Minunat is the adjectival past participle of the verb a (se) minuna, to marvel or be amazed, which in turn comes from the noun minune, meaning wonder or miracle. Romanian etymological dictionaries trace minune back to the Latin word for threat or menace, not to the Latin root that gave other Romance languages their words for wonder. Over time in Romanian the sense shifted from something threatening to something awe-inspiring, and eventually to something simply marvelous or beautiful. This makes minunat a linguistic cousin of English menace, even though the two words now feel worlds apart in meaning.
