Azi is the everyday, clipped form of astăzi, the standard Romanian word for today. Astăzi itself descends from a Vulgar Latin phrase built on the demonstrative for this and the word for day, roughly this day, rather than from the Latin hodie that gave Italian oggi and French hui. Over time Romanian speakers shortened astăzi to azi in casual speech, much as English speakers shorten today's date to 2day in a text. The full form astăzi remains standard in writing and formal speech.
