Etymology
Chestie is a colloquial clipping of chestiune, a Romanian noun meaning "matter" or "issue". Chestiune itself was borrowed from French question during the 19th-century wave of French and Latin-based vocabulary that reshaped modern Romanian. Speakers shortened chestiune to chestie in everyday speech, and it drifted from meaning "a question or issue" to the vaguer, all-purpose "thing".
