Etymology
Persoană descends from Latin persona, a word for a theatrical mask and, by extension, the character or role an actor played. Romanian inherited the word directly from Latin, and the stressed o before a following a regularly turned into the diphthong oa, the same shift seen in sol becoming soare and porta becoming poartă. The ultimate origin of Latin persona itself is debated: one old theory links it to per- (through) and sonare (to sound), describing the mask's voice-projecting function, but many scholars instead trace it to an Etruscan word for mask, phersu, which would make the connection to Indo-European sonare a false one.
