Etymology
Personaj entered Romanian from French personnage, a term for a figure in a literary or dramatic work. French personnage in turn derives from Latin persona, which originally meant a theatrical mask and came to mean a role or character. Romanian adapted the French word by replacing the French suffix -age with the native equivalent -aj.
