Etymology
Examen comes from Latin examen, which originally meant the tongue of a balance or the act of weighing. The sense shifted from physical weighing to mental testing, and Romanian took the word over directly from Latin as part of the modern, Latinate layer of its vocabulary. The word reached its current schoolroom meaning through the same path as French examen and English exam.
