Etymology
Înțelege comes from Latin intellegere, a compound of inter- ("between") and legere ("to gather, pick out, read"). The original sense was to pick out and connect ideas, which shifted to the general meaning of grasping something mentally. Romanian kept this Latin verb almost unchanged in shape, unlike many Romance languages that replaced it with other roots.
