Etymology

Tocmai entered Romanian from Slavic, from a word related to Old Church Slavonic tokmo, meaning "only, exactly". Romanian absorbed many small function words like this one from centuries of contact with Slavic speakers in the Balkans. The same Slavic root gave Romanian the verb a tocmi, "to arrange or negotiate", which shares the sense of settling on something precise.
