Etymology
Romanian borrowed imediat from French immédiat during the nineteenth-century push to re-Latinize the language. The French word goes back to Latin immediatus, built from the negative prefix in- and mediatus, the past participle of mediare, itself from medius, meaning middle. The core sense is literal: nothing stands in the middle between one point and the next.
