Etymology
Romanian borrowed "chestiune" in the nineteenth century, part of a wave of Latinate and French-influenced words that modernized the language's vocabulary for law, politics, and journalism. It reflects Latin quaestio, meaning inquiry or questioning, the same root behind French question and Italian questione. Romanian shaped the borrowing with the native learned suffix "-iune," the regular local rendering of Latin "-io, -ionem," seen also in acțiune and pasiune.
