Etymology
Romanian borrowed "rudă" from a Slavic source related to the root behind Russian "род" (rod) and Bulgarian "род", both meaning kin, clan, or birth-line. Slavic settlers and neighbors left a deep layer of vocabulary in Romanian, and kinship terms were among the words absorbed. The word settled into Romanian as a regular feminine noun for a family member.
