Etymology

Minune comes from Latin mirabilia, the neuter plural of mirabilis, meaning things worthy of wonder. Romanian, like other Romance languages, reinterpreted many Latin neuter plurals as feminine singular nouns, which is why minune ends in -e rather than reflecting a Latin singular form. The same Latin root gives Italian meraviglia and, through a different derivation, English miracle.
