Fericit is the past participle of the Romanian verb a ferici, "to make happy" or "to bless." That verb is built on the archaic, poetic adjective ferice, "happy," which was inherited directly from Latin felix, felicem, "fruitful, fortunate, blessed." This makes it one of the fairly rare Romanian core words that descends straight from Latin rather than arriving through a later Slavic or French borrowing.
