Enervă is the third-person singular simple past of a enerva, a verb Romanian borrowed from French énerver. The French verb traces back to Latin enervare, built from e- (out) plus nervus (sinew, nerve). In Latin the word literally meant to cut the sinews of, to weaken; French shifted the sense toward the modern one of wearing on someone's nerves, and Romanian inherited that shifted meaning.
