Etymology

Romanian borrowed "enervant" from French "énervant", the present participle of "énerver" used as an adjective. The French verb traces to Latin "enervare", meaning to weaken or remove the sinews, from "e-" (out) and "nervus" (sinew, nerve). Over time French shifted the sense from physical weakening to getting on someone's nerves, and Romanian inherited that newer meaning directly.
