Etymology
Romanian "aprilie" comes from Latin "Aprilis" (mensis Aprilis), the name of the fourth month in the Roman calendar. The deeper origin of the Latin word is not settled. Some scholars link it to the Latin verb "aperire," meaning to open, since April is when spring opens up. Others suspect an Etruscan source, but neither theory is confirmed, so Romanian simply inherited the Roman month name along with the rest of the Romance world.
