Etymology

Romanian borrowed "etapă" from French "étape" in the nineteenth century, during a period when Romanian absorbed many French words as part of its modernization. French "étape" first meant a stopping point where troops on the march picked up supplies, and it later widened to mean any stage of a journey or process. French itself took the word from Middle Dutch "stapel", a storehouse or market.
