Etymology
Măgar is a Balkan word for donkey, shared across Romanian, Bulgarian, and Albanian. Most linguists trace it to Byzantine Greek gomari or gomarion, a word for a pack load that came to mean the animal that carries it. It spread through the region as everyday farm vocabulary, not through Latin, which is why it looks so different from the Romance words for donkey in Italian or French.
