Excepție comes from French exception, which traces back to Latin exceptio, a noun built on excipere, meaning to take out or set aside. Excipere itself joins the prefix ex- (out) with capere (to take, to seize). Romanian absorbed the word during its 19th-century wave of French and Latin borrowings, when much of its modern abstract vocabulary was formed.
