Etymology

"Scapă" is the third person singular present of "a scăpa", from Late Latin "excappare". That verb was built from "ex-" (out of) plus "cappa" (cloak, cape), so the original image is of slipping out of a cloak someone else is holding onto. The same Late Latin root spread across the Romance languages and even reached English through Old French.
