Etymology
Romanian "cinema" is a shortening of "cinematograf," borrowed from French "cinématographe" around the turn of the 20th century. The French word was built from Greek "kinēma" (movement) and "graphein" (to write or record), describing the new device that recorded and projected moving images. The clipped form "cinema" later spread across many European languages as the everyday word for a movie theater or going to the movies.
