Exprima entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as a learned borrowing from French exprimer, itself from Latin exprimere, "to press out" and by extension "to represent in words." It belongs to the wave of Latin and French vocabulary that modernized Romanian alongside older, inherited words. The Latin verb combines the prefix ex- ("out") with a weakened compound form of premere ("to press").
