Etymology
Fraier came into Romanian from Yiddish frayer, itself from German frei, meaning free. In the criminal argot of Odessa and other port cities, a frayer was a free man, someone outside the criminal world, and by extension a naive outsider easy to cheat. The word spread through this shared Yiddish-Russian underworld slang into Romanian, Russian, and Israeli Hebrew, keeping the sense of a gullible mark.
