Etymology
Zăpadă entered Romanian from Slavic, most likely Old Church Slavonic or an early South Slavic form related to zapadъ, built from the prefix za- and the verb root pad- meaning to fall. The underlying image is of snow as the thing that falls from the sky. The same Slavic root gives modern words for west in several Slavic languages, since west was pictured as the place where the sun falls.
