Etymology
Francă is the feminine form of the adjective franc, borrowed from French franc, franche. The French word derives from the name of the Franks, the Germanic people who ruled Gaul; because only Franks held full legal freedom, franc came to mean free, and from there open and honest. Romanian kept both branches of meaning: the personal sense (sincere, direct) and the legal or economic sense (as in zonă francă, a duty-free zone).
