Începem is the first person plural present of a începe, the Romanian verb for "to begin". It descends from Vulgar Latin incipere, itself formed from the prefix in- and capere, "to take, seize". The same Latin verb gave English words like incipient, so the Romanian and English forms share a common ancestor even though they came into their languages by different routes.
