Etymology
Fumez is the first person singular present of a fuma, borrowed from French fumer, itself from Latin fumare, a verb built on fumus, meaning smoke. The Latin noun fumus traces back to a Proto-Indo-European root for smoke or vapor. Romanian kept the native descendant of fumus as the noun fum, and layered the French-style verb fuma on top of it in the modern period.
