Etymology
Volan comes from French volant, the present participle of voler, meaning to fly or to turn freely. French speakers used the same word for a car's steering wheel, a badminton shuttlecock, and a loose ruffle of fabric, all things that spin or flutter freely. Romanian borrowed the word in the 19th and 20th centuries and kept both the steering wheel sense and the fabric-ruffle sense.
