Etymology

Romanian borrowed dramă from French drame during the nineteenth-century modernization of its vocabulary, when many Romance and learned terms entered the language. French drame itself came from Greek drâma, meaning an action or a deed done, tied to the verb dran, to do or to act. The word kept its theatrical sense and later picked up the everyday meaning of a painful, emotional episode in life.
