Etymology
Roșu comes from Latin roseus, meaning rosy or rose-colored, which itself derives from rosa, rose. Regular sound changes from Latin to Romanian, including loss of the intervocalic -e- and palatalization of s to ș, produced the modern form roșu. Over time the meaning widened from rose-colored to the general term for red, unlike most other Romance languages, which kept a reflex of Latin rubeus or ruber as their basic word for red.
