Etymology
The origin of "tărâm" is not settled. Romanian dictionaries generally mark it as being of obscure origin, with some tracing it to the Cuman language, an extinct Turkic tongue once spoken in parts of what is now Romania. It is not a Latin inheritance, which sets it apart from most core Romanian vocabulary. The word entered literary use mainly through folk tales, where it names distant or magical lands.
