Generos entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as part of a wave of French and Latin borrowings that modernized the language's vocabulary. It comes from Latin generosus, meaning of noble birth or high-born, itself built on genus, meaning birth, stock, or kind. Over time the sense shifted from noble ancestry to noble conduct, and then to the modern meaning of freely giving.
