Etymology
Pușcărie comes from pușcă, meaning gun or cannon, a word Romanian borrowed from Slavic (compare Russian пушка and Bulgarian пушка). The suffix -ărie forms nouns naming a place, trade, or institution, as in brutărie (bakery) from brutar (baker). The word once referred to an armory or artillery depot and later narrowed in meaning to a place of confinement, that is, a prison.
