Etymology

Latin "gratis" was a contraction of "gratiis," the ablative plural of "gratia" (favor, goodwill, thanks). It meant "out of kindness" or "as a favor," and by extension, "without payment." Romanian borrowed the word directly from Latin, unchanged in form, as part of the wave of learned Latin and Romance borrowings that shaped modern Romanian vocabulary. The word stayed invariable, never adapting to native adverb or adjective endings.
