Etymology

Speranță comes from Latin sperantia, a noun formed from the present participle of sperare, to hope. The word passed into Romanian through the ordinary evolution of Vulgar Latin in the region, alongside close relatives in other Romance languages. It has kept its core meaning of hope or expectation with little change over the centuries.
