Etymology

Romanian borrowed "grevă" from French "grève" in the nineteenth century, part of a wave of French loanwords that shaped modern Romanian civic and political vocabulary. The French word originally named the gravelly bank of the Seine in Paris, the Place de Grève, where unemployed workers used to gather looking for hire. Over time "être en grève" (to be at the Grève, waiting for work) shifted to mean refusing to work as a form of protest, and the noun "grève" took on that new sense before Romanian adopted it directly.
