Standard Romanian uses ianuarie, from Latin Ianuarius, the month of the god Janus. Ianuar is a shorter variant heard in parts of Transylvania and Banat, regions that spent centuries under Habsburg and later Austro-Hungarian rule, where German Januar and Hungarian január circulated alongside Romanian. The form likely survives through that contact rather than through separate descent from Latin.
