Etymology
Romanian borrowed "laptop" directly from English in the 1990s, along with the device itself. The English word is a compound of "lap" and "top": a computer built to rest on top of your lap, unlike a desktop machine. Romanian kept the spelling and pronunciation close to the English original and simply gave it a neuter gender and native plural ending.
