Etymology

"Lupt" is the first-person singular present of the verb "a lupta", meaning to fight or to struggle. The verb comes from Latin "luctari", to wrestle or contend, the same source that gave Italian "lottare", French "lutter", Spanish "luchar", and Portuguese "lutar". Romanian kept this Latin verb from its Vulgar Latin base and folded it into the regular first-conjugation pattern.
