Etymology
Pretinde comes from Latin praetendere, built from prae- (before, forth) and tendere (to stretch). The Latin verb meant to hold something out in front, often as an excuse or justification, and that sense of putting forward a claim survived into Romanian. English pretend descends from the same Latin verb but drifted toward faking, which makes the two words false friends.
