Etymology

Masiv came into Romanian from French massif, which developed from Latin massa, meaning a lump or mass. Latin massa was itself borrowed from Greek maza, a word for a kneaded barley cake, tied to the verb massein, to knead. The French suffix -if became Romanian -iv, giving the modern adjective its shape.
