Etymology
Mecanism entered Romanian from French mécanisme in the nineteenth century, part of a wave of French borrowings that reshaped Romanian's technical and abstract vocabulary. French mécanisme goes back to Latin mechanisma and ultimately Greek mēkhanē, meaning device or contrivance. The Greek word is linked to mēkhos, meaning means or expedient, tracing further to a Proto-Indo-European root for power and ability.
