Romanian borrowed "misterios" from French "mystérieux" during the nineteenth-century push to modernize its vocabulary with Western Romance terms. Both trace back to Latin "mysteriosus", built on "mysterium", a loan from Greek "mystērion", meaning a secret rite or sacred teaching known only to initiates. The Greek word connects to "mystēs" (an initiate) and the verb "myein" (to close the eyes or lips, as in keeping a secret).
