Etymology
Târg entered Romanian from Old Church Slavonic tŭrgŭ, meaning market or trade. The word spread across the Balkans and Eastern Europe along with Slavic trading networks. In Romanian it kept its core sense of a place where goods are bought and sold, and it later gave rise to many town names built on the pattern Târgu- plus a river or region name.
