Etymology

The word comes from Latin conscientia, itself built from con- (together, with) and scientia (knowledge), from scire (to know). The original sense was shared or inner knowledge, knowing something with oneself, which split into the moral sense of conscience and the mental sense of consciousness. Romanian inherited the word directly from Latin, keeping both senses intact, much as French did with conscience.
