Etymology
Conștient entered Romanian from French conscient, itself from Latin consciens, the present participle of conscire, to know jointly with oneself. The Latin verb is built from com- (together) and scire (to know). Romanian also kept a native descendant of scire in the verb a ști (to know), so the borrowed word and the inherited one share the same deep root.
