Etymology

The standard spelling of this word is prost; the form proșt is simply its stem before the plural ending -i, which regularly turns s into ș in Romanian (prost becomes proști). Prost was borrowed from a Slavic source meaning plain or ordinary, and its meaning narrowed in Romanian to stupid or foolish. The same root survives in neighboring Slavic languages with a milder sense of simple or plain.
