Etymology

Romanian took "natural" from French "naturel" and Latin "naturalis" during the nineteenth century, when the language deliberately rebuilt its vocabulary along Romance lines. "Naturalis" itself comes from Latin "natura", meaning nature or the order of things, which in turn comes from "nasci", to be born. The underlying idea is birth and origin: what is natural is what comes from birth rather than from human design.
