Etymology

Romanian borrowed "nostim" from Greek νόστιμος (nóstimos), which originally meant "tasty, savory." The borrowing dates to the long period of Greek influence in the Romanian lands, especially the Phanariote era. In Romanian the sense shifted from pleasing the palate to pleasing through wit, so the word came to mean "funny" or "amusing" rather than "delicious." The Greek word itself goes back to nostos, "return, homecoming": food worth returning to.
